SUMMARY OF CHAPTERS FROM USUL AL-KAFI

THE NATURE AND ORIGIN OF THE
FAITHFUL AND THE DISBELIEVERS

1.It has been reported from 'Ali ibn al-Husayn (as) that:
Allah has created the Apostles from the clay of the 'iliyyin, both their hearts and bodies. The hearts of the faithful are also created from the same matter however their bodies are made from a clay lower than that of the 'iliyin.
As for the disbelievers they are created from the clay of the Sijjin, both their hearts and their bodies.
Then He (Allah) mixed both clays together and it is for this reason we find disbelievers taking birth from the believers and believers from the disbelievers. It is for this reason we see the faithful behaving immorally and the disbelievers acting righteously. The hearts of the faithful yearn for that from which they have been created and the hearts of the disbelievers desire that from which they have been created.

2. Abu Hamza Thumali reports from Imam Baqir (as) as he said:

Allah has made us from the loftiest of the 'iliyyin and He has created the hearts of our Shi'ah from the same substance, however their bodies are from a substance lower than that. It is for this reason their (Shi'ah) hearts long for us because we are of the same stuff.
Then he (as) recited the verse-
"Nay the book of the virtuous shall rest with the 'iliyyin (loftiest place) and what may make you know what is the 'iliyyun? [It is] an annotated book, witnessed by the most proximate [to Allah]" (83:18-21)
Then he said:
Our adversaries have been created from Sijjin and their followers are also made from it, however their bodies are made from a different matter. This is why we see their hearts always inclined to them since they are made from the same stuff.
Then he (as) recited the verse-

"Nay the book of the evil doers is secured in the Sijjin (vault/dungeon) and what may make you know what is the Sijjin. An annotated book! Sorrow be the lot of the beliers on that day" (83:7-10)
